The new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on his first day of work, met with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, January 21, 2025, in Washington, D.C. This was among his first orders of business on the same day as he was confirmed by the US Senate.

According to State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Secretary Rubio and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar “affirmed a shared commitment to continuing to strengthen the partnership between the United States and India.” Jaishankar was the first of the Quad members Rubio met, a significant sign of the importance New Delhi holds in the Indo-Pacific concerns of Washington. Rubio in particular, has been outspoken about China’s rise as a strategic and economic power in the region and beyond.

The two leaders discussed a wide range of topics, including regional issues and opportunities to further deepen the U.S.-India relationship, in particular on critical and emerging technologies, defense cooperation, energy, and on advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region, Bruce said.
